Archaeological animal bone – more than just rubbish! A Talk by Dr. Vicki Ewens

12:30 - 13:30, Huntingdon Town Hall

Archaeologists from MOLA Headland Infrastructure, working on behalf of National Highways, are running a free public talk at Huntingdon Town Hall about the amazing discoveries and stories that have come to light based on the analysis of the animal bone remains that were recovered during the excavations on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme (A14C2H) in Cambridgeshire. This talk will take place in the hall on Wednesday 24th August 2022 and there will be opportunity for Q+A.

Excavations on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme (A14C2H) in Cambridgeshire produced over 4 tonnes of animal bone. This talk, led by Dr Vicki Ewens, MOLA Senior Archaeozoologist, will provide further exciting information about how these remains were analysed and what the A14 animal bone remains can tell us about human-animal interactions across this landscape. You will hear about the actual animal bone remains found across the scheme, and you may well have seen recent news articles on the mass frog burials in The Guardian.

This is an unique opportunity to meet some of the archaeologists who were part of the team to excavate over 40 sites along the scheme covering around 234 hectares, and who are now studying the materials to develop a more detailed picture of human occupation in Cambridgeshire across millennia. Along with answering your questions, they’ll be highlighting the recent discoveries as well as the techniques that they use.

This event is free to attend. Booking is required, although places may be available on the day. Ages 10+ are welcome (under-16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times).

Masterclass Workshop: Archaeological animal bone – more than just rubbish!

14:00 - 16:00, Huntingdon Town Hall

Archaeologists from MOLA Headland Infrastructure, working on behalf of National Highways, are running a free Post Excavation Masterclass at Huntingdon Town Hall on the amazing discoveries and stories that have come to light based on the analysis of the animal bone remains that were recovered during the excavations on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme (A14C2H).

On Wednesday 24th August 2022 the historic Assembly Room in Huntingdon Town Hall will be transformed into a temporary archaeological laboratory where you will be able to get hands-on with some of the 4 tonnes of animal bone that was recovered during the excavations. This workshop, led by Dr Vicki Ewens, MOLA Senior Archaeozoologist, will provide you with an introduction into the techniques specialists use to analyse these remains.

Amongst other things you will discover:

  • What the bone can tell us about human-animal interactions across the local landscape.
  • Innovative techniques used in the industry and hear more about the different roles and career routes into archaeology
